The Sri Lanka Tea Board was established on the 1st January, 1976, under the Sri Lanka Tea Board Law No.14 of 1975, as amended by Act No. 17 of 1985, No.44 of 1990, No.29 of 2003, and No.44 of 2006. The objectives of the Tea Board under this Acts are development of the tea industry in Sri Lanka and promotion of Sri Lanka Tea (Ceylon Tea ) globally. It is the authority responsible for regulating the activities of the tea industry, viz. production, cultivating new area and replanting, rehabilitating old gardens, the establishment of factories and their operation. It also regulates the conduct of the auctions, monitors quality standards and regulates the sales, export brokerage, warehousing and shipping of tea. It also regulates controls and directs all institutions and organizations engaged in the management of tea estates and in the production and marketing of Tea.

Action is to be initiated in compatibility with industry requirement to align the current laws and regulations to fulfill the global needs.

The Tea Board will continue its regulatory funtions, especially with regrad to quality assurance, the export and local distribution of teas, as well as its overseas promotional activities.

Its new role will be one of greater partnership with the tea industry stakeholders and will be the Industry's liaison with the Government viz. Ministry of Plantation Industries.

  • Head Office - This is responsible for overall planning, direction, co-ordination, and control of the functions and objectives. These managerial functions are carried out in various sections namely, Administration, Finance and Internal audit.
  • Tea Commissioner's Division - All matters connected with regulatory functions in respect of cultivation, manufactures of tea, and quality development. The Division operates through a network of seven Regional offices.
  • Tea Export Section - All matters connected with regulatory functions in respect of disposal of made tea, warehousing, packaging, exportation and importation of tea.
  • Tea Promotion Division - All matters connected with promotion of Sri Lanka Tea locally and internationally, assisted by Overseas Offices. Provide market intelligence periodically and as per the demand of the Industry. A Tea Sales Counter highly beneficial to the locals and foreigners is in operation.
  • Statistics & Information Technology Unit (IT) - Collecting analyzng and dissemination of statistical information for requirement of decision makers. The Unit oversees the automated system of the Organization.
  • Analytical laboratory - Analytical laboratory is responsible for testing and issuing of quality certificates for tea on Chemical, Pesticide and Microbial quality parameters, using high - tech equipment. Accreditation for ISO/IEC 17025 is targeted.
  • Tea Tasting Unit - Tea Tasting Unit is responsible for examination of quality of tea on Minimum Quality Standads and reference standard of Lion Logo and examination of other origin teas through an independent panel of expert Tea Tasters.
  • Library - It consists of a significant and rare collection of technical and other tea related literature.
  • Ceylon Tea Museum - The Ceylon Tea Museum in Kandy which was incorporated in 1998 under the Companies Act 1982 of Sri Lanka and declared open to the public in December 2001 is managed by a Board of Directors headed by Chairman, Sri Lanka Tea Board.
